Florian Hoffmeister, BSC, is a German director of photography known for his compelling captures, versatile voice and talented lensing behind the camera.
Hoffmeister’s latest work can be seen on the upcoming AppleTV+ series "Pachinko," where he shot four episodes of the highly anticipated drama. From showrunner Soo Hugh, "Pachinko" stars Yuh-Jung Youn (Academy Award winner for Minari), Lee Min-Ho, Jin Ho and introduces Minha Kim for her debut feature. The series is based on the critically acclaimed novel of the same name by Min Jin Lee and is scheduled to release March 25th.
Another recent showcase of Hoffmeister’s lensing can be seen on "Antlers." From director Scott Cooper and produced by horror-master Guillermo del Toro, "Antlers" is a horror mystery following a mysterious forest entity plaguing a small town on the Oregon coast. Hoffmeister also shot "Official Secrets," Gavin Hood's critically-acclaimed political thriller starring Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes and Matt Smith.
In feature films Hoffmeister is mostly known for his collaboration with Terene Davies, for whom he lensed "The Deep Blue Sea" starring Rachel Weisz, Tom Hiddleston and Simon Russel-Beale, as well as their Emily Dickinson project "A Quiet Passion," starring Cynthia Nixon and Jennifer Ehle. His other features include Charlie Stratton’s "In Secret" with Elizabeth Olsen, Oscar Isaac and Jessica Lang as well as David Koepp’s Mortedecai, which similarly boasted a star-studded cast including Johnny Depp, Gwenyth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor.
In television, Hoffmeister’s work can be seen on shows such as "House of Saddam," "Great Expectations" and "The Terror." For his work on Brian Kirk’s "Great Expectations," he earned a slew of awards, including a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Cinematography for a Miniseries or Movie, a BAFTA TV Award for Best Photography and Lighting: Fiction and an ASC Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography in Television Movie/Mini- Series, establishing himself as the first cinematographer to win an Emmy, a BAFTA and an ASC award for the same program.
