Edifier R1280DB Sound Test

The Edifier R1280DB arrived in a regular stable and color printed box. The package includes: an active speaker with a power cord, a passive speaker, a compact infrared remote control, a speaker cable, a stereo 3.5mm to RCA cinch cable (RCA to RCA) and a detailed manual. Each speaker measures 146x234x196 mm (WxHxD) and as a pair they weigh early five kilograms. The black housing is made of MDF and has real wood side panels that give the R1280DB a very classic look. The front grilles can be removed if necessary, allowing a variable design.

The loudspeaker cabinets are decoupled from the ground by four feet each. A magnetic shield ensures effective protection of surrounding electronics, so that the R1280DB can also stand next to a PC. At the rear of the “active speaker” are the connection options (dual RCA, optical and coaxial). With the easily accessible, laterally placed bass, treble and volume controls, the sound can be adjusted to personal preferences. The volume can also be adjusted via IR remote control. Overall build quality is excellent.

Sources can be connected either by RCA, optical or coaxial cable or via Bluetooth. The Edifier R1280DB comes equipped with 13 mm silk dome tweeters and 116 midrange/bass units. Power is rated at 21 watts RMS, which should be adequate for a medium sized room.
The sound quality is surprizingly good, the highs are clear and the midrange is quite decent, making these very enjoyable for listening to music and excellent for gaming or videos. There isn’t a lot of Bass but this was to be expected.
