Welcome to this video explaining the requirements for IFR planning in Europe / U.K. for helicopters.

We will look at the general rules behind the weather requirements for take off, destination and alternates. We then go through a worked example using real world weather. This video isn’t intended to cover all eventualities or regulatory areas- plus the company operations manual may have more restrictive criteria, or limitations depending on the helicopter equipment and serviceability, type of flying or if you are flying single pilot or multi crew, so please check the relevant sections of the AIP or manual before flight!

First of all, you need to look at the general synoptic picture and understand what is driving the current weather - this is important when selecting an alternative airport - there is no point choosing another alternative airport nearby if it is going to be effected by the exact same weather as your designation, that is too bad to land at.
