Before mowing the first time, be certain the new sod is actually “attached” to the ground via the root structure. This is as simple as kneeling down on the lawn and grabbing the sod, it should resist being lifted off the ground.
Lawnmower blades typically spin at 3000 RPM and slice the grass as it passes over the lawn. If mowed too soon, a blade can actually lift the sod and shred it into compost! Nobody wants that. And make sure your blades are sharp. The average cost to sharpen a mower blade is only $8 and about $17 to replace = well worth the time and money to get a clean cut. A sharp mower is essential – white or yellow grass blade tips are the result of a dull mower.
Always remove the grass clippings or use a mulching mower. Remember to “overlap the deck” when you mow to get an even, clean mow height.
