As the opening track on Vinnie's debut album Mind’s Eye (1986/87 on Shrapnel Records), In Control was a calling card. By the time this track hit, Vinnie had already done time with Vicious Rumors and even landed that famous Pepsi commercial gig where it’s just his hands on screen tearing it up.

Mind’s Eye pushed him from “underground monster” to one of the big names in neoclassical and instrumental rock, and “In Control” is the tune that kicks the door down. The riff is tight and hooky, the soloing is insane but still singable, and Tony MacAlpine even shows up on keys to add that extra prog/neoclassical gloss.

Decades later, Vinnie would go on to spend over 20 years as lead guitarist for UFO, tour with Alice Cooper, and release a long run of solo records, but a lot of people still point back to this track as the moment he officially entered the guitar-hero conversation.
