Aid agencies in Uganda say parts of the country are facing a serious humanitarian crisis following increased fighting between Ugandan rebels and government troops. Some 60,000 people have reportedly fled the fighting in the mountainous areas bordering the Congo. Close to 20,000 have ended up in the tiny town of Bundibujo, 500 kilometres south
west of the capital Kampala.
Aid agency officials fear an outbreak of disease as the displaced find shelter in shops, schools, hospitals and churches and camp in the open in crowded and unsanitary conditions.
Bundibujo's hospital is overcrowded with wounded and malnourished women and children, many suffering from machete wounds.
The United Nations World Food Programme have been delivering badly needed aid to the area but have been hampered by dangerous, rebel infested roads through the mountains.
