In 1993, Tool played two nights at the Scientology Celebrity Centre in Hollywood, and it went about as badly as you would expect. The band refused to change their set or their attitude, even though the venue was packed with Scientologists. The openers leaned into the chaos, annoyed the crowd, and by night two, things escalated fast. Mics were cut, bands were pulled off stage, and a tense backstage confrontation followed. According to Maynard James Keenan, the venue sounded terrible, the vibe was hostile, and the entire situation felt surreal. It was all part of a failed attempt to use Tool to attract younger people to Scientology, which backfired completely. This is one of the strangest early chapters in Tool’s history.
