The submarine Ukraine claims to have hit is a Project 636 Kilo-class boat, one of Russia’s quietest diesel-electric submarines and a key launch platform for Kalibr cruise missiles. Russia only has six of them in the Black Sea. They are not easy to replace, especially under sanctions.
