The Tectonic Modelling Laboratory at the University of Bern offers innovative and state-of-the-art facilities to model and analyze in detail a large variety of tectonic settings. Our analogue models are analyzed by means of (inclined) top view photography for Digital image correlation (DIC) methods, allowing a detailed assessment of 3D surface evolution. Furthermore, X-ray computed tomography (XRCT)-scanning techniques permit visualization of the interior of a model without destroying it, providing in-depth insights into the 3D geometry of the model and of the kinematic development of model structures with time. Digital volume correlation (DVC) analysis of XRCT volumes allows us to quantify the 3D spatial and temporal strain patterns inside analogue models. With these tools that uniquely allow us to fully quantify internal and external deformation of our model over time our lab is at the forefront of geological innovation.
