This is the 2024 William J. Degutis Women in Science and Health Lecture series presentation delivered at DePaul University College of Science and Health, May 2, 2024 by keynote speaker Margaret Amsler, PhD. This captivating event marks a significant milestone as it features a distinguished DePaul University alumna as our keynote speaker! Margaret ‘maggie’ amsler was a student of famous Antarctic Researcher Mary Alice McWhinnie in Biological Sciences here at DePaul and has had a fascinating and accomplished career since her graduation.

Margaret "Maggie" O'Leary Amsler is a distinguished marine biologist whose groundbreaking research has significantly contributed to our understanding of polar ecosystems. Initially focusing her studies on the Antarctic krill, Maggie has since delved into broader areas of marine ecology, particularly in subtidal benthic ecology, invasive crab species, and the profound effects of ocean acidification.

With an unparalleled dedication to her field, Maggie has dedicated over 8 years of her career to conducting research in Antarctica. Throughout 30 expeditions, she has tirelessly worked aboard research vessels and at remote research stations. Her commitment to exploration is exemplified by her extensive experience, having completed over 500 polar scuba dives and logged 33 submersible hours, descending to depths of up to 1000 meters in polar waters.

Maggie Amsler's pioneering work continues to illuminate the complex dynamics of polar ecosystems, paving the way for enhanced conservation efforts and a deeper understanding of the impact of climate change on our oceans.

Whether your passion lies in marine biology, climate change, thrilling adventures, or you simply champion the cause of women in science, this lecture promises to ignite your curiosity and inspire your mind.

The William J. Degutis Women in Science and Health Lecture Series is an annual event in the College of Science and Health, generously supported by Dr. Linda C. Degutis (’75, BS Nursing). The purposes of the lecture series are to promote the accomplishments of women in the natural and health sciences and in the closely related fields, as well as create scholarship and community among faculty, students, staff, and the public. Each lecture is presented by a prominent scientist at the forefront of these fields, and the speaker usually participates in additional programming with DePaul students and faculty.
