A statue commemorating the friendship between Russia and Ukraine has been torn down in the latest move to eradicate any lingering reminders of the Kremlin.

The eight-metre (27-ft) statue of a Russian and Ukrainian worker was decapitated on Tuesday before the rest of the monument came crashing down.

The statue was located underneath a giant titanium 'People's Friendship Arch', erected in 1982 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Soviet Union.
At least 100 onlookers cheered and shouted “glory to Ukraine” as the statue fell with a hollow clang.
