The 1977-78 season saw the realisation of a 57-year-old dream as Wrexham reached the second tier of the English Football League with an emphatic 7-1 victory over Rotherham. Their biggest win of the season capped quite possibly their biggest season of all time as they finally joined the illustrious company of Newcastle United, Sheffield United and West Ham United.

With promotion already secured and the Racecourse Ground in celebratory mood ahead of kick-off, a side including Mickey Thomas, Bobby Shinton and Les Cartwright made sure Wrexham completed this campaign with a flourish.

After 34 minutes the hosts were up five nothing with striker Les Cartwright making four of those goals before getting on the scoresheet himself with the seventh. It’s still regarded as one of the greatest days in the club’s history.

Wrexham: Davies, Evans, Dwyer, Davis, Roberts, Thomas, Shinton, Sutton, Lyons, Whittle, Cartwright
