In the early 1900s, two Notre Dame graduates, Rev. Michael J. Shea, class of 1904, and words by his brother John F. Shea, class of 1906, decided that Notre Dame needed a fight song. They wrote the original lyrics and score in 1908 which are very similar to what is heard today, however the lyrics were revised in 1920 and in 1928 then-band director Joseph Casasanta wrote the richly textured arrangement of the march that is still used today.
