Rajagiri hospital conducts a historic 600 Total Knee Replacement Surgeries in 2022.
Rajagiri Hospital Department of Orthopedics successfully completed knee replacement surgery on more than 600 patients from different countries this year. This is the first time that such a large number of knee replacement surgeries have been performed in a short span of time in Kerala. This historic achievement was attained by the Department of Orthopedics under the leadership of Dr. Murukan Babu, along with Dr. Tom Jose, Dr. Paul K. Jose, and Dr. Sachin George, HOD Anesthesia.
There has been a recent emphasis on minimally invasive and muscle-sparing approaches in orthopedic surgery. The Orthopedics department used the Subvastus approach which avoids cutting the muscles in the Knee and only the leg is numbed by spinal anesthesia. This approach offers significant benefits to patients over traditional Knee Surgery and results in less post-operative pain and easier, quicker rehabilitation in the early postoperative period. The patient can return to normal life in a short time after the surgery, The patient is usually able to start walking on a walker the day after the surgery and is able to leave the hospital within three to four days.
With years of experience in joint replacement surgery, Dr. Murukan Babu has performed more than 3000 total joint replacements independently. Dr. Murugan Babu has also completed over 4000 arthroscopic surgeries to correct ligament-related problems in knees. Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteo Arthritis are the causes of knee wear and tear. The procedure involves cutting away damaged bone and cartilage from the thighbone, shinbone and kneecap and replacing it with an artificial joint (prosthesis) made of metal alloys, high-grade plastics and polymers and the surgery is conducted without affecting the muscles and nerves inside the knee.
