Nosferatu is given the meta treatment in Shadow of the Vampire (2000), starring John Malkovich and Willem Dafoe. A fictional account of the silent era classic's production, the film toys with the rumors surrounding the film's mysterious star, Max Schreck, who some believed to be a real vampire. The film is both playful with its premise yet respecting of the source material, creating a movie that is comic and dramatic in equal measure.


Unsurprisingly, the highlight of Shadow of the Vampire is Willem Dafoe's portrayal of the titular villain. It is worth watching for him alone.
