How to Tie and Use the Pipe Hitch

Whereas the rolling hitch is used to tie the rope to itself, the pipe hitch is used to tie the rope to an object. Use this knot when you need to lift a pipe or pole, or in any application where the tension on the rope will be approximately in line with the longitudinal axis of a smooth pipe or pole. It is similar to the icicle hitch, except that to use the icicle hitch you must be able to pass a bight over the end of your pipe. If this is impossible, the pipe hitch can be used, as it finishes with a clove hitch.
