今回は琵琶湖が育んできた豊かな自然と、そこに生きる魚たちをご紹介しました。琵琶湖は世界でも有数の古代湖と言われており、魚たちはその長い歴史の中で様々な進化を遂げてきました。そのため、琵琶湖には固有種が多く生息しています。例えば、ビワコオオナマズ。名前にビワコとついているこのナマズは最大で1m30cmを超えるという、日本最大の淡水魚の一つです。このほかにも「ビワマス」「ビワヨシノボリ」「ビワコガタスジシマドジョウ」などたくさんの琵琶湖に由来した生き物がいます。このような豊かな琵琶湖ですが、近年の河川改修や外来生物、乱獲などによって失われつつあるのです。この映像を通して、少しでも生き物に興味を持ち、未来の地球環境を考える機会になっていただければ幸いです。

In this issue, I introduced the rich nature that Lake Biwa has nurtured and the fish that live there. Lake Biwa is said to be one of the most ancient lakes in the world, and fish have evolved in various ways over its long history. As a result, Lake Biwa is home to many endemic species. One example is the Biwako giant catfish. This catfish, with the name Biwa in its name, is one of the largest freshwater fish in Japan, with a maximum length of over 1m30cm. In addition, there are many other creatures originating from Lake Biwa, such as the Biwa trout, Biwa reed bunting, and Biwako-gata striped loach. Such richness of Lake Biwa is being lost in recent years due to river improvement, invasive alien species, and overfishing. We hope that this video will give you an opportunity to become interested in living things and think about the future of the global environment.
