On 5 March 2026, nearly 19 million voters in Nepal will elect 275 members of parliament in the country’s first general election since dramatic youth-led protests toppled the government in September 2025.
The crisis began when the government banned more than two dozen social media platforms, triggering nationwide outrage. What started as opposition to censorship quickly evolved into a broader movement against corruption and economic stagnation. Security forces opened fire during clashes, leaving at least 77 people dead. As unrest spread, then prime minister K. P. Sharma Oli resigned, and an interim administration led by former chief justice Sushila Karki took charge.
Now three distinct contenders define the race: Oli, seeking a comeback; Gagan Thapa, who promises generational reform within the establishment; and Balendra Shah, the former rapper turned Kathmandu mayor representing youth frustration.
With more than 3,400 candidates, nearly 30 percent under 40, the election is seen as a referendum on whether Nepal’s political system can genuinely renew itself — or revert to old power structures.
