Why to Plan & Limit Your Postdoc Time I Santosh Bharti

The length of a postdoctoral research position can vary depending on a variety of factors, such as the field of research, the specific project or experiments involved, the funding available, career and the individual goals of the postdoc researcher.
Typically, a postdoctoral research position should lasts between one and three years. But, it lasts for 5-10, even 15 years in some cases. It may be possible to extend the position for additional years (depending upon funding) to complete the task, but it should be planned very carefully keeping career goal in mind. Postdoctoral research fellow who don’t achieve academic positions (asst. prof.) after 5-10 years, most of the time they end up start in industry from scratch or lower ladder.
It's also worth noting that postdoctoral research positions are intended to be temporary training period, transitional positions that help researchers gain additional skills and experience before transitioning to a permanent research or academic position. However, the length of time spent in a postdoc position can vary depending on the individual's career goals and circumstances.
