Brian Hertzog, 34, has been umpiring for nine years, three in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League, which is one step from the Major Leagues. But, as Brian points out, that's a big step. He aspires to one of the 75 big league positions, of which maybe one a year becomes available. He takes pride in wearing the uniform; he can remember to the day the first time he wore it. Underneath the basic black is a lot of protective gear, including football-like shoulder pads.
