A childhood prank turned tragic in Houston, Texas, when 11-year-old Julian Guzman was shot and killed while playing ding dong ditch with his cousin.

The boys rang the doorbell of 42-year-old Army veteran Gonzalo Leon Jr. again and again. But instead of brushing it off, prosecutors say Gonzalo armed himself, hid in his yard, and opened fire as the kids ran away. One bullet hit Julian in the back. He collapsed a block away, crying that he could not feel his legs, before dying in the hospital the next day.

Inside Gonzalo’s home, police found more than 20 firearms. Prosecutors have signaled they may pursue capital murder charges. His lawyer argues Texas Stand Your Ground law could apply, claiming he did not know who was outside his door that night. But prosecutors say the children were unarmed and fleeing, and nothing justifies turning a prank into a death sentence.
