Listen to the iconic sounds of Australian rainforests, the call of the Eastern whipbird - Psophodes olivaceus.

Walk in the tropical rainforests of Queensland and you will hear a very loud bird call everywhere you go. From dawn until dusk, the unmistakable whipbird calls resonate through these extremely humid jungles and rainforests. They are incredibly loud for such a small bird and penetrate through the undergrowth very easily.

Whipbird calls are made up of a short whistle and then a frequency sweep that goes slightly up and then descends, from about 7 kHz to 1kHz. There are some overtones as well, and it all sounds rather made up in a sound design studio. This iconic Australian bush sound is a lovely reminder that nature and evolution can be pretty creative.
