Coleman 530 Stove Complete Teardown Rebuild and Maintenance

After a great deal of searching, I've come across a Coleman 530 in great condition, a civilian adaptation of the WWII field stove. We will disassemble, inspect, clean and reassemble the unit and test it.


The inspection of cosmetics, mechanics and all parts shows a wonderful condition for its age with very minor wear, possible little use. Only the burner mildly out of center. Disassembly begins with the removal of the top portion with the four flathead screws followed by the burner, cleaner tip and pump retainer screw, cleaning lever and knob screw.


The cleaning lever block falls out followed by the unscrewing of the gas cap removal. the main valve is removed in the soft jaws of a vice. This allows for the inspection of the tank which shows minor debris inside. White gas is used for flushing. Each cycle is filtered into a coffee filter for re-flushing.



The pickup tube now disassembled is cleaned out, checked for obstruction followed by the disassembly of the burner. The burner screen is removed, unraveled and cleaned. The pump cavity is cleaned with carb cleaner, dried with compressed air, inspected and lightly oiled with remoil.


Polishing of the main unit commences which brings it to a shine after which the pickup is reassembled and reconnected to the fuel valve. This with the gas cap is reinserted into the main unit and retightened. After this, the pump is reinstalled into the unit along with the retaining screw.


After testing pressure with the pump the cleaning needle is inspected and connected to the eccentric block with the knob. This is followed by the installation of the burner, Fuel knob and knob decal.


A second polishing is done, this time finished of with Carnuba wax for testing. The same polish and wax process is done for the top portion. After this, the top is reconnected to the bottom. The outer pots went into the dishwasher and were then scrubbed clean. I had also picked up the two missing parts of this set from oldcolemanparts.com during this build.


Testing of the unit was then conducted for correct operation.
