The Battle of Felucia was one of the most grueling and tragic campaigns of the Clone Wars. Unlike other engagements where the Republic's primary objective was to capture territory or secure resources, the Battle of Felucia became a relentless hunt for General Grievous, whose motives had shifted from military victory to the systematic hunting and slaughter of Jedi. The dense, toxic jungles of Felucia provided the perfect setting for Grievous’ brutal campaign, and the battle would come to symbolize the harshest and most costly aspects of the war.
General Grievous’ shift in strategy marked the beginning of the Republic’s nightmare on Felucia. After his genocidal assault on Dathomir, the Republic was able to track Grievous' movements, leading them to Felucia, where he had established a hidden droid base. Rather than focusing on tactical victories, Grievous made it his mission to kill as many Jedi as possible. To achieve this goal, he established a hidden droid base deep within the planet’s toxic jungles. The base was fortified with natural defenses, as the poisonous gases and dense flora of Felucia made it nearly impossible for enemy forces to approach without proper equipment or air support.
To counter this threat, the Republic dispatched clone forces equipped with BARC speeders and AT-TE walkers to navigate the treacherous terrain. However, these ground-based units had limited success due to the dense foliage and unpredictable ambushes from Separatist forces. The Republic’s most effective tool was the LAAT/i gunship, which provided the ability to patrol the jungle from above, identify enemy positions, and deploy clone forces directly into the heart of the battlefield. This tactic allowed for quick response times and gave the Republic a much-needed edge in dealing with the droid ambushes.
The Separatist droid forces employed guerrilla warfare tactics, frequently ambushing Republic patrols and then retreating into the jungle. These hit-and-run attacks were often led by General Grievous himself, who took a hands-on approach to the battle. His presence on the battlefield had a devastating impact on Republic morale, as his infamous reputation as a Jedi killer spread among the ranks. Grievous’ personal involvement made each ambush more dangerous, and every engagement risked the death of another Jedi Knight.
Realizing the scale of the threat, the Republic deployed several Jedi Generals alongside clone battalions to track down Grievous’ hidden base and eliminate him. The mission, however, proved more perilous than anticipated. Over the course of the campaign, four Jedi were killed by Grievous, their lightsabers added to his growing collection of trophies. The loss of so many Jedi deeply shook the Republic’s confidence, and it became clear that more experienced leadership was required to bring Grievous to justice.
In response, the Republic dispatched Jedi Generals Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi to Felucia to take charge of the mission. Their combined experience and leadership brought renewed hope to the Republic’s forces. Anakin’s aggressive, fast-paced tactics complemented Obi-Wan’s more measured approach, and the two devised a strategy to locate and assault the droid hideout. After weeks of reconnaissance, the Jedi finally discovered the location of Grievous’ secret base in the Tagata region, a particularly hazardous area filled with dense vegetation and toxic gas pockets.
Anakin and Obi-Wan launched a coordinated two-pronged attack. Anakin led the 41st Ranger Platoon on a flanking maneuver through the eastern jungle, while Obi-Wan led the bulk of the 41st Elite Corps in a frontal assault.
