On January 12th, 2006, the emotional evening that began with Messier’s No. 11 being hoisted to the Garden roof, Jaromir Jagr scored 14 seconds into overtime to give the Rangers a 5-4 victory over the Oilers. It was a Garden extravaganza, the ceremony lasting 78 minutes and reducing Messier to tears several times. The Rangers had to complete the scene by beating Messier’s first NHL team, the Oilers. Jagr found the short side on Jussi Markkanen from the right circle for the winner.
