Описание к видео Charles de Gaulle House in Lille, FRANCE (La Maison natale Charles de Gaulle)

#CharlesdeGaulle
A place of remembrance
Charles de Gaulle was born at 9, rue Princesse in Lille in the home of his maternal grandparents, on November 22, 1890. This house was the place of family reunions throughout his childhood and youth. It was in a family united around common values (patriotism, religious fervour, sense of commitment, etc.) and in a geopolitical context in full upheaval, that the character of the future President of the Fifth Republic was forged.

A historic monument, the Charles de Gaulle birthplace is intended to introduce a wide audience to the childhood and genesis of the man who would become the most illustrious of the French.

The Charles de Gaulle Birthplace was the subject of alarge-scale work campaign in 2020 which made it possible to consolidate the structure of the dwelling but also to completely renovate it (decorations restored, living rooms rehabilitated, winter garden restored, etc.). The house recreates the atmosphere of an interior characteristic of the industrial bourgeoisie of the North at the end of the nineteenth century as Charles knew it as a child. A 100% immersive visit!

A museum complex
In addition to visiting the historic section, faithful to the Belle Epoque spirit of Charles de Gaulle, the Birthplace is also a place open to contemporary history. An important cultural programme is developed and finds its place in the temporary exhibition space as well as in the documentation centre with an auditorium.

Each year, the Maison natale offers the public at least one temporary exhibition as well as various forms of events: readings-shows, screenings, demonstrations and initiations of historical battles, visits in period costumes, concerts, conferences.

A major renovation
With an increasing number of visitors, the Birthplace is now structurally disturbed and needs to be reinforced and secured to ensure the sustainability of this important place of remembrance.

It closed its doors on November 4, 2019 for a major work campaign. A 1st phase planned for 2020 will involve the repair of the structures and facades, but also the rehabilitation of the living rooms, the restoration of the period decorations and the winter garden.

It will reopen its doors to celebrate the 130th anniversary of Charles de Gaulle's birth on November 22, 2020.
