Описание к видео Why You Should Get Your PhD at a HBCU

Pursuing a doctoral degree at a historically Black college and university (HBCU) is a unique experience. I began my PhD program in African Studies at Howard University during the fall of 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Founded in Washington D.C. in 1867 by a Congressional Act, Howard University is a significant, prestigious and world renown higher education institution, and known as the Mecca among HBCUs. The first institution in America to offer a doctoral program in African Studies with an esteemed faculty that resembles the African diaspora and are leaders, pioneers and practitioners from various sectors, the program offers students a wealth of professional development opportunities in both Washington D.C. and on the African continent.

As a rising 4th year student who is beginning to work on a dissertation focused on Africa, international public policy, and public policy in South Africa, I have been engaged in a lot of useful activities. I thought it would be a good idea to share insights about the significance of pursuing and obtaining a doctoral degree at a historically Black college and university, especially for those interested in obtaining a PhD at an HBCU in the 21st century. As one who studied sociology as an undergrad at Morgan State University, and international relations and economics at the masters level at Johns Hopkins University, I am grateful and looking forward to sharing all that I’ve learned.

Below are the links and a lot more information is available on this subject, especially from HBCU graduates and scholars currently working at these invaluable institutions.
