Mid-sagttal view of the fetal profile at 11-13 weeks of pregnancy is widely used for nuchal translucency (NT) thickness measurements. Recently, it has become apparent that abnormalities in the fetal brain, easily visible in the standard views used for measurement of NT, can identify open spina bifida (meningomyelocele).

Fetuses with open spina bifida have obliteration of the 4th ventricle of the brain due to dorso-caudal displacement of the middle brain structures. This video clip explains methodology of fetal intracranial translucency (4th ventricle) visualization for first-trimester screening of open spina bifida. Intracranial translucency (IT) is the term proposed to describe the 4th ventricle of the fetal brain in midsaggital plane.
