Milford On Sea Aerial tour, Marine Memories

Описание к видео Milford On Sea Aerial tour, Marine Memories

Welcome back marine memories here on the channel. Join us on a journey down Hurst Spit ending up at the famous Hurst castle. The castle itself was one of the most advanced artillery fortresses and was built in 1544 by King Henry VIII as a means of protecting the solent. In the 17th century the castle was used as a prison, claiming King Charles the 1st as one of its prisoners. It was later strengthened during the 19th and 20th centuries and played an important role in defending the western Solent from invasion threats from the Napoleonic wars through to the second world war. The original castle is part of a chain of forts all along the southern coastline (as far along as Cornwall) to protect the country.
