【032】The Bass Riff That Sparked My Passion: David Sanborn's 'Rush Hour

When I was just starting out on bass, my bass teacher showed me a recorded video of the jazz fusion festival "Live Under the Sky." I was struck by the coolness of the bassist playing a green Music Man StingRay. As a beginner, I was blown away and determined to practice that bass riff tirelessly. Of course, back then, there were no tablatures or YouTube, so I watched the videotape until it wore out. I'm grateful to my bass teacher from those days.

This bass riff is from David Sanborn's "Rush Hour" performed live at the "Live Under the Sky" festival. As a high school student, I was just obsessed with slapping, but I recommend starting with a slow bpm for practice.
