Park Sang-hak is a North Korean defector who went from living a privileged life under the North Korean regime to becoming one of its most dangerous critics. Once trusted by the system and born into an elite family, Park later became a man who gave sleepless nights to Kim Jong-un—not with weapons or missiles, but with balloons filled with information.

Park Sang-hak lived a luxurious life in North Korea, enjoying privileges denied to millions of citizens who were starving. His father was a high-ranking spy for the North Korean regime, which granted the family special status. Like many elites, Park believed North Korea was a paradise and that the Kim family were god-like figures.

That illusion shattered when his father committed an act against the regime. The government turned hostile overnight. The family was left with only one choice: escape North Korea or face certain death. Park and his family managed to flee to South Korea, but the price of freedom was terrifying. The North Korean regime took revenge on relatives left behind, brutally torturing and imprisoning them.

After arriving in South Korea, Park finally understood what democracy meant and how the world truly works. For the first time, he realized he was breathing freely.

North Korea is a country where information is tightly controlled, and telling the truth can cost one’s life. Park understood that the Kim regime’s power rests almost entirely on controlling information. If ordinary North Koreans learned the truth about the outside world, the regime would collapse.

With this realization, Park founded Fighters for a Free North Korea, an organization dedicated to breaking the information blockade.

From near the South Korea–North Korea border, Park launches large helium balloons into North Korea. These balloons carry leaflets, USB drives, and radio transmitters containing uncensored global news, South Korean media, and information about human rights and democracy. Over the past decade, Park has sent millions of leaflets into North Korea.

Because of his actions, Park has received repeated death threats from North Korea and has survived multiple assassination attempts. He has also faced intense pressure from the South Korean government to stop his activities. Yet, he has never backed down.

Even today, while much of the world sleeps, Park Sang-hak continues launching balloons near the border—quietly sending truth into one of the most closed countries on Earth.
