The United States is to keep some of its embassies in North Africa and the Middle East closed until the end of the week as a precaution due to a possible al-Qaeda terror threat.

Yesterday 21 diplomatic posts were shut in response to intelligence or so called "intercepts" gathered from the phones and emails of terrorist suspects.

Speaking on a television programme Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss said the security measures were necessary:

"We didn't take heed on 9/11 in a way that we should but here, I think it's very important that we do take the right kind of planning as we come to the close of Ramadan. We know that's always an interesting time for terrorists. ... This is the most serious threat I've seen in the last several years."

Some European countries have also closed their embassies in Yemen where al Qaeda is known to be active. However US embassies in Kabul, Baghdad and Algiers will reopen today. But a worldwide travel alert warning Americans to be cautious in the Middle East and North Africa remains in place.
