Tony Paul - January 21, 2023 - Anthony’s Cari-Jazz Artiste of the Day
In his formative years, Tony Paul won several titles including ‘Best Junior Instrumentalist’ and ‘Most Outstanding Wind Instrumentalist.’ It could only get better from there for this native of Trinidad and Tobago as he continued to develop his proficiency with the Flute Clarinet and Saxophones.

Raised in a musical family, an appreciation for the arts developed early for Tony. In 2006, he enrolled in the BA (Hons) Jazz Studies degree at the esteemed Leeds College of Music (LCM) in the UK. At LCM, he had the opportunity to play with outstanding musicians, including Cuban jazz violinist Omar Puente who frequently gigs with Courtney Pine. Tony honed his craft as the flutist for the LCM Latin Big Band and chose the alto sax to play with the LCM Contemporary Big Band.

Tony names as some of his influences: Michael Brecker, Kenny Garrett, Paquito D'Rivera, Chet Baker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Nina Simone, Lord Kitchener, Black Stalin, and Mighty Sparrow....the list is endless.

In April 2010 Tony was featured with the Caribbean Jazz group Èlan Parlè at the Tobago Jazz Experience. Then in April 2012, he was again with the group at Jazz on the Beach in Mt. Irvine, Tobago. In 2014, Tony Paul rose to ‘Headliner’ at the Tobago Jazz Experience marking a significant milestone in his career with his first performance as a soloist at a major festival. Following his successful debut at that festival, Tony went to a highly competitive and intensive week long workshop held at Carnegie Hall in New York and presented by the world-renowned jazz master, Paquito D’Rivera.

Tony Paul is considered a “first call” musician on the local jazz scene both as a sideman and as a soloist and has performed extensively with Trinidad icons Ray Holman and Clive Zanda. He has a keen interest in the development and education of young musicians and (because of this) he has recently completed his MMus in music education from Boston University.

In 2017, Tony teamed with Dean Williams, guitars and Tamba Gwindi, percussion to form ‘The Electro Acoustic Trio.’ Their objective was to incorporate the acoustic and electronic sounds of their repertoire of Trinidadian folk music, Afro-Caribbean, and Jazz. (Electroacoustic Music? Music from around the middle of the 20th century, following the incorporation of electric sound production into composition and performance.) The Trio set out to perform three Very Special One-time Performances (VSOP.) These performances, although loosely rehearsed, were built around the art of free-form jazz whereby each musician created freely on stage as the song developed. The experiment worked and each musician showed their experience, creativity, and character. We can only anticipate an ‘Electro Acoustic Trio II.’
Currently on the teaching staff at The Academy for the Performing Arts (UTT) as a Senior Instructor of Woodwinds, Anthony has just been named the Leader of the Jazz & Contemporary Music Studio with the mandate to help develop the jazz curriculum at the Academy. Tony is currently working on new material for an upcoming debut album.
