Jonas Malheiro Savimbi was an Angolan rebel military leader who founded and led UNITA in a guerrilla war against Portuguese colonial rule from 1966 to 1974, then confronted the soviet and cuban backed MPLA forces during the Angolan Civil War from 1975 to 2002 when Savimbi was killed in a clash with MPLA government troops.
