Economic Regionalism: FTAs, Supply Chains, & Securitization

The rise of economic security policy, the impasse at the WTO, and the war in Ukraine appear to have slowed momentum for economic globalization. However, a new wave of economic regionalism has emerged in Asia with the emergence of multiple mega-regional commercial agreements including CPTPP, RCEP, and IPEF. ASEAN countries appear to be at the heart of this regional economic integration amid great power competition between China and the United States as well as efforts to reconfigure strategically important supply chains away from China.

This panel will examine the convergence of regional economic agreements and the attempted rearrangement of international supply chain networks as well as the future of trade openness moving forward.

This panel is part of the second annual East Asia Strategy Forum co-hosted by the Institute for Peace & Diplomacy and the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada held in Ottawa from November 1-2, 2022. #EASF2022
