12/15/24~JBSW Eagles~Congrats On Their First Egg Of Season 2024-25.

This has to be the quickest egg laying that I have seen. Congrats to Mom and Dad.
Welcome to the John Bunker Sands Eagle Tower camera. This camera offers a view into the everyday life of wild bald eagles and their nest located in Seagoville, Texas. High winds cause the camera to move occasionally, this is the motion of the camera, not the movement of the nest itself. The eagles inhabit this nest from October-June.

They used it ( the tower nest)from 2013 to 2020. They lost a chick to hypothermia in 2021 when the newborn was in contact with the steel. They built a new nest in the tree that year and have raised young for the last two years in the tree…

ANSWERS TO TOWER CAM QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE
The view out the arm of the tower faces roughly NW. The Wetlands are to the right. The camera may move around on occasion if an operator decides to see what may be around.
Best estimate places the weight of the nest at 7-800 lbs. It has withstood straight line winds in excess of 90 mph over the last 6 or 7 years so nest integrity is a pretty safe bet.
If you hear the eagles calling loudly off camera it is because they are perched on a portion of the tower that is off camera. The favored posts are at the top of the tower some 20 ft higher.
For the first weeks prior to laying eggs the pair will randomly visit the nest. Mom usually spends more time there than Dad and she is likely to stay most of the night on some evenings.
Mom is pretty territorial about how the nest is to be arranged. Dad tries to pitch in but is often rebuked. These can be pretty entertaining moments. Both will begin bringing sticks to the nest to be arranged around the edge. These are the 'crib rails' that will keep the young birds contained for the first 5 or 6 weeks.
Mating will occur with increasing frequency (on camera and off). At first, this activity is designed to eventually stimulate the female to produce the egg(s) to be fertilized. Eggs have been laid in January prior to 2019 and have come in December for the last 3 years.
The loud, rapid calls you hear on the camera system serve as:
A greeting to the mate as it returns to the nest.
A warning to any large bird that ventures into their territory.

There are also some single note calls and some quieter vocalizations you may pick up on.
