I traveled and stayed at the coveted ryokan Zaborin in Niseko, Hokkaido JAPAN.

Zaborin opened in Niseko in 2016. Its roots date back to the 2000s, when director Shoya Grigg purchased land surrounded by virgin forest.

This is a story from before inbound tourism to Japan really took off, when Niseko was gradually gaining attention. It is amazing how decisive he was to purchase such a large piece of land in Niseko at a time when the current bustle could not be imagined.

After his touring ryokans all over Japan, he was so impressed by them that he decided to build Zaborin as a Japanese ryokan.

The building, designed by Hokkaido's leading architect Makoto Nakayama, is covered in concrete and has an inorganic feel at first glance, but there is a courtyard inside, which gives the building a sense of unity with the great nature of Niseko from anywhere inside the building. There are only 15 guest rooms on the vast land, and all of them are independent, making for a luxurious design that ensures a sense of privacy.

The interior of the building is decorated with a modern design, with a theme of the praise of shadows, and the beautiful light and shadows of the interior. There are many shared spaces, such as a living room and a library, and it was hard to decide where to spend time. It would be a waste to stay in your room, this is the kind of inn.

The hot spring is a free-flowing spring water drawn from the hotel's own source. There is no large public bath, but the rooms are equipped with indoor and outdoor baths, and you can feel the unobstructed nature of Hokkaido from the outdoor bath, especially from the outdoor bath. The outdoor bath in the room, where you can see the nature without worrying about the surroundings, is surprisingly rare even in Japan. Such a wonderful experience can be said to be one of the wonderful things about Zaborin.

Dinner is called "Kita Kaiseki" which means norhtern Japanese meal prepared by Chef Seno, who is from Hokkaido. The beautiful menu, which looks and tastes great, matches the atmosphere of Zaborin and keeps you entertained until the end. You can choose between Western and Japanese food for breakfast, but I definitely recommend the Japanese food. The atmosphere of the private rooms in the dining area is also wonderful.

A coveted inn that you'll want to visit again and again. Recently, he opened new hotel SHIGUCHI in Niseko, a renovated old house. I'm still debating whether to revisit Zaborin or go to SHIGUCHI next. This is a must-visit inn for anyone who loves architecture and art.
