Описание к видео Evergreen Rag 1915 by James Scott | PC Ha Gau

This video, along with its description (click more), should be viewed with

The sustain pedal is not used in either of these performances.
The effect is achieved by holding down the syncopated (anticipated
beat) notes for their full durations. To use the sustain pedal for this
purpose destroys the musicality of the piece.

" [1] GENERAL DIRECTIONS
[i] Give each note its proper count
[ii] The bass must be kept firm and smooth on the counts 1. 2. 3. 4.
[iii] Avoid playing too fast. Ragtime should be played at slow march tempo.
[iv] For convenience and uniformity, all arrangements are in 2-4 time."
Winn's Practical Method of Popular Music: Rag and Jazz Piano Playing. [1913 ~ 1920].

James Scott, ranked #2 on the the John Stark hierarchy of Classic
Ragtime Composers, marks this piece "Not Fast".
Not Fast - could anything be plainer?
And of course Scott Joplin, ranked #1, noted many, many times that
Ragtime should "Never be Played Fast" and moreover should be played
exactly as written.
The melody and simple arrangement of the “trio” in this one
leads me to play this as a ragtime dance (two-step) with a
top-end tempo of 110bpm.

For instruction on playing in slow 2-4 time please watch my
"Ragtimers Busted" videos here,

NB "Since the revival of interest in ragtime it had become confused
with Jazz and jazz pianists were playing ragtime with considerable
improvisation and with a rhythmic emphasis which completely
altered the character of the music. The great composers like Joplin,
Scott and Lamb felt that their music was essentially melodic, and an
over-emphasis of the rhythm usually almost obliterates the melodic line.
And too, they labored over their music, and EVERY NOTE WAS TO BE
PLAYED AS WRITTEN . IMPROVISING was considered to be a TRICK OF
LOW-CLASS PLAYERS (emphasis added).
Joe not only did not improvise when he was playing, he played from the
music to be sure of every note."
Joseph Lamb - A study in classic ragtime (1960) - Liner notes

Concerning LOW-CLASS players:

"The Ordinary Faults in a Performance
. . . lack of accuracy and faithfulness in interpreting the original text, interpolation
of strange passages, changing the terms of expression given by the composer;
unnecessary doubling of the notes where the author desires single notes . . ."
The Art Of Pianoforte Playing (By Ernst Pauer) (1877)_p70
https://archive.org/details/artofpian...

from the "King of Ragtime Writers"

"... "JOPLIN RAGTIME IS DESTROYED BY CARELESS OR IMPERFECT RENDERING, AND
VERY OFTEN GOOD PLAYERS LOSE THE EFFECT ENTIRELY BY PLAYING TOO FAST"
(emphasis added)
Scott Joplin "School of Ragtime" (1908)

And, last but not least,

". . . TO CHANGE THE TIME AS ESTABLISHED BY THE COMPOSER, IS TO DESTROY
THE TRUE CHARACTER OF THE PIECE BY THE SUBSTITUTION OF FALSE AND OFTEN
UNMEANING EFFECTS."" [emphasis added],
Celebrated Instructions Piano Forte School (By Franz Hünten) (1864) p13

For those insensitive to correct interpretation, here are some superfast renditions.
Note. Even as a brisk march, anything quicker than 128bpm is TOO FAST
