Regaining Hand Movement After Paralysis | Paralysis Hand Exercise | Dr. Puru Dhawan

Today in this video, Dr. Puru Dhawan is going to talk about why the closing of the fist is easier than the opening for a paralysis patient.

To understand that first, we will have a closer look at our hands, the outer part helps to open the fist and the inner palm muscles help to close it. And when the outer part is not having the energy the patient is not able to open the fist easily. The hands of a paralyzed patient are affected because the part of the brain that used to control that very part has stopped working due to Brainstroke. When the patient is recovering from paralysis it gets difficult to open up the fist than close it. The difficulty is because our hands have lesser muscles and low nerve connections due to which the command that is given by the brain is not followed.

Now we know why it is difficult to close and open our fists while recovering from paralysis. To bring back the energy to open the hands we do various exercises to strengthen the muscles in our outer hands.

1. To strengthen the muscles we have to flex the fist backward as shown in the video with the help of our other hand or the caretaker. Keep the hands open and try to bring control over it, second thing you can do is hold a remote in your hand tightly and then leave the remote by opening the fist. If you are not able to hold on to a remote you can also use ice to do the same activity by doing this will stimulate the brain to open the hands.

2. Once the recovery has started next exercise that is recommended is to make a fist and hold it with the other hand and now try to open the fist. Do as is shown in the video. This exercise strengthens the muscle that helps to open the fist.

3. Next, exercise also helps to strengthen the outer muscle of the hand, you can take a rubber band and put it over the finger and try to open the fist as much you can so the rubber band is pushed out of the hand, all the fingers should be together as shown in the video. The recovery process is very slow but with repeated exercises or activities we can gradually get better.

4. At the end of the video, we will witness a paralysis patient, who is 63 years old. GR Sharma had two Brain strokes in the past and the right side of the body was paralyzed. But within a month of treatment at Sai Sanjivani the patient was able to a drastic change in his life and was able to walk again. At Sai Sanjivani all the patients are treated with medicines to increase the brain's capacity and by doing neuroplasticity.
