The My Father The Judge Grand Robusto was named the “Cigar of the Year” for 2024 by Cigar Aficionado. In this video, I talk about ratings – specifically, how vitola affects taste (so an award winning cigar of one shape/size could be a stinker in another size), how construction quality may vary from one cigar to another, and whether “blind” taste tests are in reality probably not blind.

I also discuss Sumatra wrappers – some cigar Sumatra wrappers are (surprise) grown in Sumatra, which as a very mountainous west area that lends itself to tobacco growing. But most of the Sumatra wrappers we smoke in New World cigars are grown in Indonesia (the islands east of Sumatra) and Ecuador.

Personally, a couple of my favorite tasting medium body cigars are Indonesian Sumatra wrappers (the R&J 1875 for one) but Indonesian-grown Sumatra tends to be frowned upon by high end cigar makers in favor of Ecuadorian Sumatra wrappers -the particular variety grown in Ecuador is darker, richer and tends to be bolder than Indonesian. Beside The Judge, the Oliva Melanio and Ashton VSG feature Ecuadorian Sumatra wrappers.

The Judge is a nice, nice looking cigar. Foot band, double paper band and nice rich color. It’s a pretty firm box press and a stubby 5” x 60 gauge.

The construction on this cigar was not bad – at first. A bit of canoeing, but good burn and draw. About halfway down, I tried to slide the main band to make room for the burn line, but it didn’t budge. Upon removing it, there was a rather large glob of glue that ended up creating a huge flaw (crack, binder showing). I managed to fight it down to about 2” but had to give up – keep in mind, losing the last 2” on a 5” stick is not a good thing.

Flavor was really my main issue with this cigar. I love Oliva V Melanio and like the Ashton VSG – but The Judge taste did not impress me. It was rather flat and one dimensional (wood, wood and more wood) and not the complex wonder that some other reviewers claim.

Overall, I’m going to ignore the construction flaw so no markdown for that. But the taste being what it was for me, an 8.5/10 is all I can muster, and I could be convinced that an 8/10 rating is more suited to The Judge.
