Construction Timeline:
Bridge construction began in December 2022.
The project consisted of 54 segments, with 27 built out from towers on both the U.S. and Canadian sides.

Mid-Span Closure:
On June 14, workers installed the final segment under balloon lights.
Ironworkers and operating engineers from both countries worked until dawn to set the last piece in place.
This officially created the third international crossing between the two cities, alongside the Ambassador Bridge and Windsor–Detroit Tunnel (both nearly 100 years old).

Edge Girders and Alignment:
Quebec’s CanAm Group manufactured custom components for the final segment.
Two edge girders, nine redundancy girders, two floor beams, 12 precast panels, and 12 soffit panels were used.
Unlike other segments, the closure didn’t require stay cables.
Crews ensured precise alignment by bolting the edge girders to both sides of the gap.

Remaining Steps:
Temporary closure beams, wind struts, and transverse cranks were removed.
Remaining mid-span components were installed and bolted.
A global survey of the entire structure was conducted.
Stay cables were re-stressed as needed.
Finally, a topping-out ceremony with an evergreen tree marked the completion.

Here are some facts about the Gordie Howe International Bridge:

Length
The bridge is about 1.5 miles long and will be one of the five longest bridges in North America when it's completed.

Design
The bridge is cable-stayed and has a main span of 0.53 miles, which is the longest of any cable-stayed bridge in North America. It also has the longest composite steel and concrete bridge deck of any cable-stayed bridge in the world.

Towers
The bridge's Canadian and US towers are each over 625 feet tall, but will eventually reach a height of 722 feet.

Bridge deck
Construction of the bridge deck began in December 2022 and was expected to be completed by the end of June 2024. The deck is made up of 54 segments, including a custom-built mid-span closure that takes four to six weeks to install.

Cables
The bridge has 216 stay cables, and all but 10 were installed by mid-June 2024.

Path
The bridge will have a 12-foot-wide path for pedestrians and cyclists, which will be the first legal way to cross the Detroit River on foot. The path will connect to local trails and streets on both sides of the bridge.

Connections
In the US, the bridge will connect to Interstate 75 with dedicated ramps, and 1.9 miles of the highway will be widened and rebuilt.

Gordie Howe International Bridge news:
The decks of the bridge on the United States and Canadian sides are now connected, marking a significant milestone. Project officials confirm that the bridge remains on track to finish in September 2025. Once completed, it will be the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America, spanning 2,798 feet across the Detroit River.

Originally scheduled for completion by the end of 2024, the new Detroit-Windsor span is now expected to open in 20 months, allowing cars to cross between the two countries.
