Here is a high-scoring, no-continue playthrough of Sega's The House of the Dead III on PC! Just in time for Halloween, which is when this game takes place in 2019!

This was played with the Arcade Mod, which makes it more like the original Sega Chihiro arcade version (lives capped at 5, faster reloads, and a credits system). Download it here: https://github.com/argonlefou/Hotd3pc...

Released in 2002 for arcades, The House of the Dead III deviated a lot from its predecessors by taking place in the "future" (2019, ha!), replacing pistols with shotguns, having a time-based element, and reducing the amount of branching paths. These changes were controversial among some fans, so it's common to hear HOD3 be regarded as a weak entry in the series.

I personally like the game, though definitely not as much as the first two. The gore is super detailed and great. The story cleverly ties back to the original game. It develops Dr. Curien as a villain and expands on lore that was briefly mentioned in an obscure Japanese guidebook, and has simple but touching themes of family and believing in yourself.

On the other hand, the scoring system is strange. This is a general 1CC playthrough that doesn't go deep into higher-level scoring tech -- that may be subject of a future video -- but you wind up scoring more points by shooting enemy limbs instead of their heads, despite that headshots score more points.

You also get higher awards killing enemies quickly ("Excellent" is the best) or by killing two enemies at once ("Twin Shot"). I believe your end-of-stage rank is based on how quickly you beat a stage. S ranks are the best and earn you two bonus lives, while an A rank awards just one.

You can score more points by shooting bosses in their legs, and then taking damage on purpose, which is a weird strategy that appears again in Chariot's fight from House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn.

The arcade version isn't emulated currently and is becoming harder to track down in real life, in my experience. Overall I think the Arcade Mod is a great alternative. The faster reload speeds especially make the game so much more fluid, and being able to cap your lives at 5 means the game isn't too easy, unlike the original port which let you go up to 9 lives.
