At the age of 17, Zheng Yuhuang gave up his guaranteed admission to Xiamen University and insisted on going to Tsinghua University in Beijing. On his first day of registration, he felt the huge difference between his family background and that of his classmates: while his classmates had Sony Walkmans costing 1,500 yuan, he could only afford a generic brand costing 50 yuan. But it was precisely this disparity that sparked his most primal determination: " Today I may not be as good as you, but one day I will surpass you." This almost obsessive dedication enabled him to excel in his class, eventually pursuing a PhD at Columbia University, and ultimately becoming a professor at Tsinghua University. When the notion that ‘children from poor families rarely achieve greatness’ was widely prevalent, this scholar who hailed from a small county in Fujian Province remained steadfast in his belief: ‘All efforts require nearly 99% more effort than others.’ He spent half his life proving this statement true.
