Kitangur Subrahmanya Swamy Temple is one of the prominent temples in South Kerala. The history of this 3000 year old temple is intertwined with many legends. Women are not allowed in the Nalampalam as it is dedicated to the celibate Balasubramanian. One of the tallest golden flagpoles in Kerala is located here. Another feature of the place is the large Ootupura built by Dharmaraja. There is a rarity that Bhuvaneshwari, who is the Goddess of Shakti, is seen as a monkey facing south. Ramayana and Mahabharata characters are beautifully depicted in the Rangamandapam at Koothambalam, believed to have been built by Peruntacha. Another attraction here is Kurunthoti pillar. Perhaps nowhere else in the world can you see such a huge Kuruntotti pillar. Even if they say that there is such a thing, many people will not believe it. It takes about 4200 years for a baby to grow as big as a pillar. It is celebrated here on the day of Kartika in the month of Kumbh. The grand Tiruvutsavam which lasts for ten days attracts devotees and art connoisseurs to the utmost.
