Festival Cultural de Calaveras 2021 | Día de Muertos in Aguascalientes Pt 2

Día de muertos in Aguascalientes is a big deal, as is in most of Mexico. Each year since 1994, the Festival Cultural de Calaveras (Cultural Festival of Skulls) is one of the most important events for the state of Aguascalientes. It was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic, and it is said that the festival in 2021 was smaller than previous years, offering only 200 events as opposed to the nearly 300 in previous years.

This 5-day festival is a HUGE celebration filled with color, joy, sadness, nostalgia, love and family. We learned so much more about the Day of the Dead celebration, history, and symbolism. We didn’t grow up making altars for Day of the Dead, as our families were more Catholic and the tradition wasn’t a strong component of our parents’ upbringing. But as we continue our journey to strengthen our connection to our Mexican heritage, we have embraced this tradition as one of the most emblematic examples of mestizaje (the blending of European and native mesoamerican cultures).
