उनी हुनलाई एउटा महानगरका मेयरमात्र हुन् । तर उनको तुलना अन्य नगरका मेयरहरुसँग होइन, प्रधानमन्त्री र मुख्य दलका मुख्य नेताहरुसँगै हुन्छ । उनी कहिले प्रधानमन्त्री पुष्पकमल दाहालसित भिडिरहेका हुन्छन् त कहिले नेकपा एमालेका अध्यक्ष केपी शर्मा ओलीसँग । नेपाली कांग्रेसका सभापति शेरबहादुर देउवा पनि उनको प्रहारको घेराबाहिर छैनन् । उनले शीर्ष नेताहरुको जति आलोचना गर्छन्, आम जनताबाट उति नै समर्थन पाउँछन् ।

उनी अर्थात् काठमाडौंका मेयर बालेन्द्र शाह, जसको छोटो नाउँ बढी प्रचलित छ- बालेन ।

हरेक कालखण्डमा एक-एकवटा 'हिरो' खोज्नु नेपाली समाजको विशेषता नै हो । अहिले त्यो भूमिकामा बालेन देखापरेका छन् ।

कुनै सभा-समारोहमा जाँदा प्रधानमन्त्री वा राष्ट्रपतिभन्दा बढी बालेनकै वाहवाही भएको हामी देख्छौं । चियापसलदेखि सोसल मिडियासम्म, देशका कुनाकाप्चादेखि विदेशसम्म— नेपाली डायस्पोरामा समेत उनी उत्तिकै चर्चित छन् । बालेन पदीय जिम्मेवारीले एक नगर प्रमुखमात्र हुन् । तापनि उनले यस स्तरको चर्चा किन पाइरहेका होलान् ? के कारण उनी यसरी लोकप्रिय भएका हुन् ?

बालेनको लोकप्रियताका पछाडि मुख्यतः चारवटा कारणहरु छन् । ती चार कारण के-के हुन्, कृपया कार्यक्रम पुरा हेर्नुहोला ।

He is just a mayor of a metropolis. However, he is not compared to the mayors of other cities but to the Prime Minister and the main leaders of the major parties. Sometimes he clashes with Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, and other times with CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli. Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba is also not outside the circle of his criticism. The more he criticizes the top leaders, the more support he receives from the common people.

He is Balendra Shah, also known as 'Balen,' the mayor of Kathmandu.

It is a characteristic of Nepali society to find a hero in every era, and now Balen has emerged in that role.

When we attend public functions, we see that Balen receives more applause even than the Prime Minister or the President. From coffee shops to social media, from remote corners of the country to abroad, he is equally famous among the Nepali diaspora.

Balen is officially just a city government head. However, why is he receiving this level of attention? Why is he so popular?
