Jacob Wetterling case files released, Stearns County Sheriff says 'We all failed'

A significant portion of the documents and information covering the entire 27-year investigation into the abduction case of Jacob Wetterling have been opened to the public now that a legal dispute over the release of the file has been settled.

In a scathing press conference, Stearns County Sheriff Don Gudmundson lashed out at law enforcement over how the investigation into the Wetterling abduction was handled in the early days of the case. "The right hand literally didn't know what the left hand was doing," he said.

Gundmundson said the 1990 arrest of Danny Heinrich while he was drunk in a Stearns County bar was ill advised. The sheriff said the subsequent interrogation by inexperienced investigators was a "fatal flaw" in the search for Wetterling. In 2016 Heinrich admitted to the abduction and murder of Jacob Wetterling.
