We have not covered this volumetric construction approach to figure drawing much, instead focusing more on observational skills, finding interesting shapes and prioritising gesture. This is a powerful exercise that will help train your eyes to understand the figure in 3 dimensional space, and give clarity to the viewer.

We aren't presenting this volumetric drawing with boxes method here as our preferred way to draw, but as an exercise. A box is the simplest representation of a 3 dimensional volume. By pushing yourself to make decisions about the figure in those very simple terms, you gain a deeper understanding of the figure's forms. You can more easily make sense of the perspective and you can also create figures more easily from your imagination.
