A fire that started at an electricity substation late on Thursday, March 20, has wrought havoc in London, leaving thousands without power and forcing Heathrow Airport to shut down.

The London Fire Brigade said 10 engines and about 70 firefighters were tackling the blaze on Nestles Avenue in Haye.

Sergio Vilelas captured the blaze from a bus.

“That’s a biggie,” a passenger can be heard saying.

The London Fire Brigade said it received more than 190 calls alerting crews to the fire, with the first at 11:23 pm. The cause of the fire was not yet known.

“This is a highly visible and significant incident, and our firefighters are working tirelessly in challenging conditions to bring the fire under control as swiftly as possible,” the brigade said.

Heathrow Airport announced it was closing until 11:59 pm on Friday, March 21, after a “significant power outage”.
