Louise I. Schneider, MD, describes the Cancer Diagnostic Service at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center (DF/BWCC). This unique program can expedite a diagnosis in patients who present with signs or symptoms of cancer and the appropriate next steps are unclear.

Patients who are candidates for the service are those who have been found by their physicians to have abnormal findings, either on physical exam or on diagnostic testing, most likely imaging. Patients who come to the Cancer Diagnostic Service Clinic do not yet have a diagnosis of cancer.

The Cancer Diagnostic Service provides an efficient path to reach a timely diagnosis and avoid unnecessary testing and delays in treatment. The physicians at the Cancer Diagnostic Service will:

1. Thoroughly review patient medical history and records to ensure that they are appropriate for this Service;
2. Promptly schedule appointments;
3. Conduct a comprehensive diagnostic workup with input from consulting oncologists;
4. Provide a detailed report to the referring physician regarding findings and next steps;
5. Quickly connect patients to the appropriate cancer specialist(s) at DF/BWCC, if required.
